I tell you an story …

Val di Non is one of those places that can surprise you in a pleasant and discreet way, reserving infinite spells, immersed in a welcoming and generous nature. Each season tells its unique charm but at the end of the summer there is a moment where wherever you look you will notice its extraordinary wealth made of hectares and hectares of apple trees, a real nature show. And then you realize how much effort, work and sacrifice thousands of people take every day to take care of those fields …

Here, from this love for the land begins the history of Mas dei Chini.

Generation after generation my whole family took care of the fields dedicated to arable land and fodder, as well as the breeding of cattle, therefore the red grapes cultivation from which wine was produced which was bartered even without any label. At the head of all Nonno Gloriano, among other things also mayor of the small village of Segno, a man animated by an extraordinary resourcefulness, at least for that time, just think that he was the first in the Valley to buy a tractor.

We are farmers people in our heart and as our tradition, both my father and my brother have chosen our land to build a future family, and I’m with them too, even if at the beginning, when I was younger I chose to get my own way and to do other things in life. But, how the people use to say “the blood is not water” and it was impossible to ignore this deep connection with my origins.

So, first I bought some land close to the family, I turned them into an apple production farm and it’s really gave me great satisfaction, then other hectares of vineyards in a corner of Trentino, in Cadino di Faedo, on the provincial border between Trento and Bolzano. A limestone soil not so much generous and difficult to cultivate, exposed in such a way that it never sunbathes in the morning with a vineyard that grows practically among the stones. Even the performance is not generous, if you look at it from the point of view of quantity, but no doubt it is the quality product that it pays off for the vineyards effort and tenacity with a high level of excellence that offers intense fragrances and precise characteristics. Ideal, for a sparkling wines.

Then, a few years ago we found this XIX century farm, located on the first hill of Trento.

I fell in love with it at the first glance and just in a few days I managed to buy it together with five hectares of vineyards and with the cellar, the thing that I wanted most. We called it “dei Chini”, as a “family” place. A glimpse of peasant life and nature relatively close to the city, we also wanted to transform into a cozy B&B with nine rooms for those who want to fully enjoy the peaceful farm life and into a vineyard with truly amazing food and wine proposals.

But we did not stop … and here, again on these hills, another seven hectares of land, already planted with vines, exposed to the sun all day: it is here that aromatic white grapes are produced which give life to a pleasant Gewürztraminer, which is being refining harvest after harvest and the young Lagrein with its alpine liveliness.

Producing a good wine requires a lot of work, but above all, care, love and passion … we are talking about something alive that carries within itself an extraordinary uniqueness. It is not just a question of soil, climate, cultivation, but what really makes the difference are the people who deal with it, every day with great dedication.

The greatest satisfaction comes to us from our Inkino Trentodoc, dedicated to an illustrious missionary ancestor, Father Eusebio Chini, born here, in Segno, in 1645, and whose family coat of arms with the stylized helmet we have taken. Father Eusebio had gone on a mission to Arizona and Mexico where the locals called him Father Kino, hence the name we gave to our bubbles. The second label, on the other hand, Inkino Charles V which recalls the act of the Spanish emperor who gave our ancestor the noble title, represents another small excellence that we are very proud of.

Certainly a great challenge awaits us as the goal we aspire to is to remain with a pure and high quality Reserve line, albeit with limited numbers. But I would say that “who starts well …”
